Tripping over and falling can be part of many people’s daily routine - most of us know someone who’s prone to it!

If it’s minor, we brush it off and joke about it, but other times, it can be severe and call for serious measures.

The most recent statistics from the Health and Safety Executive show that slips, trips and falls are the most common causes of injury in the workplace. More often than not, these injuries can lead to further problems and usually leave employees unable to work, or in the worst cases, cause death.

In 2016/17:

  • 609,000 non-fatal injuries were reported by employees.
  • 70,116 non-fatal injuries were reported by employers.
  • 434,000 accidents left people unable to work for more than 7 days.
  • 28% of fatal accidents were falls from height.

Slips and falls are also the most common accidents that cause serious injuries in public places, as stated by the RoSPA, and in many cases, it wasn’t their fault.

It is the responsibility of employers, the local authorities and owners of premises to ensure that their areas are properly maintained and that they are providing a duty of care to workers and the public.

Our WHOOPS infographic shows what should be done in the event of an accident, whether in work or elsewhere. Keep these useful tips in mind and if you experience a WHOOPS moment, you might find yourself wanting to make a slip, trip and fall claim to receive compensation, which would help with your recovery, medical costs and loss of earnings.
